The «TECHNICAL AESTHETICS AND DESIGN RESEARCH» journal was created in order to form an agenda in the field of self-determination, positioning and promotion of design in the Russian and world scientific and professional space. To achieve the goal, the editorial board of the magazine sets up the following tasks:

  • to bring professional discourse to a new level by reassessing the values formed by the VNIITE system, the science and practice of Soviet design;
  • to concentrate design efforts on the journal for the possibility of professional reflection of the current situation and the development of promising development strategies;
  • to popularize design in Russia, convincing the state and business of its usefulness, economic and social efficiency, the prospects of support and promotion.

Nowadays, the global transformations that are characteristic of design as a professional sphere are not currently analyzed. The new profession, which gives rise to vivid discussions of a number of scientific schools that have formed in design, has been replaced by safe «qualification» works, interesting only to a small group of specialists.

The editorial board of the journal «Technical Aesthetics and Design Research» do not set up the task of starting to publish «Technical Aesthetics» journal again, which performed the function of intermediary, connected between the only emerging kind of professional activity in the country and those areas in which design could be useful. In the conditions of the information vacuum and strict objective asceticism of the 60s–80s, any «news» about the beautiful material world that really exists abroad or in the imagination of national designers and researchers were interesting to the widest group of the journal readers. The inertia of VNIITE is our current worldview; the virtual world of humanistic design created by that system; is a tool allowing us to affect the radically changed society and through which we evaluate everything that happens.

Today, we are talking about an analytical vacuum, which is acutely felt in conditions of a clear visual information overload and which must be filled subject to the communicative adequacy of future texts.


The principles of the journal content formation:

  • the basis for the formation of the journal is the principle of thematic issues. Each of such issue has its own curator, involved in attracting authors;
  • the format of the «semicircular table», which is implemented before the publication of each thematic issue, involves face-to-face or remote discussion of its problems by key authors, followed by fixing the stated positions and involving other authors in the general discussion space.
